PTSD, Alcohol and Drug Use Study (CTAU)
A substudy of PTSD along with alcohol and drug use relating to recent trauma exposure is collected by the Texas Childhood Trauma Research Network (TX-CTRN) through survey instruments, blood, saliva and urine samples during participant baseline and subsequent visits. As with the Main CTRN study, the collected data is deidentified and curated at regular intervals to share as data products for research. Access to the curated, deidentified data products will be made available to approved researchers via the texasctrn.org portal and file repository. Information for requesting access can be found here. The data products associated with the PTSD Alcohol and Drug Use (CTAU) Study are described below.

PTSD Alcohol and Drug Use (CTAU) Data Products
All data products made available through the TX-CTRN portal login are participant records which have been filtered to remove personally identifying and health information (PII/PHI). Data is further deidentified through the following methods and transformations:
- Date of birth and dates of service are removed and replaced by “age at the date of the visit” calculated in months. These calculations are consistent with requirements for data publication through the National Institute of Health’s National Data Archive (NIH NDA),
- Data associated with location have been removed or aggregated into groups large enough to maintain individual anonymity. For example, ZIP codes may be truncated or removed entirely based on the number of individuals represented.
- Identifying demographics and fields with sparse data are removed or aggregated
CTAU Survey Instruments (Descriptions of Psychosocial Data Collected)
Alcohol USE Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT): The AUDIT is a 10-item screening tool developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess alcohol consumption, drinking behaviors, and alcohol-related problems. Both a clinician-administered version and a self-report version of the AUDIT are provided. Participants should be encouraged to answer the AUDIT questions in terms of standard drinks, A chart illustrating the approximate number of standard drinks in different alcohol beverages is included for reference. A score of 8 or more is considered to indicate hazardous or harmful alcohol use. The AUDIT has been validated across genders and in a wide range of racial/ethnic groups and is well-suited for use in primary care settings. Administered at every visit.
Drug Effects Questionnaire (DEQ): The DEQ is used to document how much alcohol a participant consumed during their most recent drinking occasion and to capture the effects they experienced. It also records whether any drugs were used, the method of consumption, and the effects of that drug use. Administered at every visit.
Sample Info (SI): Provides a registry of information relating to sample collection. Blood and urine samples are obtained at baseline, 12 month, and 24 month visits. A saliva sample is obtained at the baseline visit.
Substance Use Inventory (SUI): The SUI is used to record drug and alcohol use in the past 30 days. Administered at every visit.
Timeline Follow Back Assessment of Alcohol and Drug Usage (TLFB): The TLFB is a calendar-based, retrospective assessment tool for measuring alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana consumption over the previous month, including the amount used each day. Administered at every visit.
